Underground Thanet Event
The Friends of the Shell Grotto have announced their next event, which will be a fundraiser for our good pals at the Friends of Margate Caves. UNDERGROUND THANET: An illustrated talk by Rod LeGear Thursday 8 November, 7pm, £4 Walpole Bay Hotel, Fifth Avenue, Cliftonville The talk will look at many examples of Thanet’s rich underground heritage including: the enigmatic Shell Grotto (that’s us!); air raid shelters from both world wars; underground chapels; and tunnels used by smugglers. There will also be a detailed look at the chequered history of the Margate Caves with the story being brought up to date with news of the Friends of Margate Caves’ plans for the future of this classic Margate attraction.
The author of Underground Thanet, Rod is founder and principle Field Officer of the Kent Underground Research Group. He has more than 40 years’ experience in surveying and recording underground sites in Kent.
Doors open 6.30pm. Talk begins 7pm. Interval bar.
